How To Save a Choking Dog

CCPROTECTIONDOGS.COM
Your Personal Protection Dog is like any other animal, and can act curious about practically everything. Dogs often express their curiosity by picking up different things with their mouths. Being that they are low to the ground, this allows them to have numerous opportunities to gobble up objects, that could become choking hazards. It is important for a guard dog owner to know if your dog is actually choking and what to do if this emergency arises. If your Protection Dogs suddenly begins to run around in circles, pawing at their mouth, and is acting wildly and disoriented, they most likely have something lodged in their throat. These behaviors are what your dog does when trying to dislodge the item themselves. However, your protection dog may not be able to remove the object on their own, so it is your responsibility to step in and help them. Below are steps on how to save your choking protection dog.

First, if you think that your dog may be choking or have any doubts that they are able to breathe, call the emergency number for your vet immediately. Note that if your dog cannot breathe, they will not be able to cough or make noise. Once you get a hold of your vet you may be talked through first aid procedures, and asked to bring your pet in immediately. If for some reason you cannot contact your vet or until you get them to help, attempt to save your guard dog by using the following steps.
  1. Restrain your dog if necessary.
  2. Approach them slowly, speaking in a reassuring tone.
  3. Clear their airway by opening the dog's mouth carefully. Do this by grasping the upper jaw with one hand over the muzzle. Press your thumb on one side of the mouth, and your fingers on the other. Apply firm pressure to force their mouth open. If you can see the
  4.  object, try removing it with your fingers.
  5. If you cannot remove the object, large dogs like German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, and Dutch Shepherds must be placed on their side on the floor. Place your hand just below the rib cage and press down slightly forward and firmly, then release. Repeat this several times until the object is dislodged.

To Kennel Or Not To Kennel Your Protection Dogs

A dog kennel or a dog run is an enclosed outdoor area, usually secured by a chain-link fence and gate, in which a canine is kept. The use of a kennel has become standard practise, especially among owners of working dogs and other large canines. However, while the use of a dog kennel certainly isn't terrible, it may not be the best solution for your canine.

When making your decision on whether or not to kennel your Personal Protection Dog you must take into consideration the natural behavior of a dog. Many people make the mistake of assuming that what feels natural to them as a human will be true of their canine. Unlike many humans, dogs are not claustrophobic. In fact, small enclosed environments that simulate natural dens make them feel protected and comfortable. However, while this applies to the dog house or crate where your canine will be spending his nights, it does not apply to the kennel or dog run where your canine may have to spend his days.

The ideal environment to keep your dog would be a large, fenced-off yard. Some kind of fence or enclosure is preferred, especially in rural environments, as it helps prevent other wild animals from wandering in. If your yard is not an option, a kennel may be the only other solution, but remember that bigger is always better. The more space you can give your canine, the happier and healthier it will be.

We at CC Protection Dogs don't believe in housing our Guard Dogs and Protection Dogs in the traditional method, which is to have dog kennels or dog runs. We feel that this creates erratic behavior in the dogs; they end up pacing back and fourth, and it creates a spinning effect. We at CC Protection Dogs prefer a more natural environment. That is why we give all of our Guard Dogs and Protection Dogs free range on our 5 acre state-of-the-art facility. This creates a much more balanced canine, and a much happier dog.

Customizing Our Personal Protection Dog

CCPROTECTIONDOGS.COM
Filling out the Customization Form was quite exciting, because we were one step closer! After choosing German Shepherd Protection dogs as our preferred breed, we also decided that we wanted to have a female. Both my husband and I felt confident that a female was the right choice, I have always heard that females are more inherently protective and that gives me comfort. In regards to color we do not really have a preference, but we chose black and tan anyway. Next, while filling out the household information we informed them of how many children we have and their ages. I really appreciated that they put this portion in because it was important for us to tell them that we have a newborn on the way.

In addition, we explained in detail our property information, everything from our type of home, square footage, and yard size. Living in an upscale California residential area we are extremely fortunate to have our homes on relatively large pieces of land. It may not be as much as what we had in our previous home upstate, but I am thankful for it nonetheless. Just recently my husband had a new fence installed previous to our knowledge of getting a protection dog in California, so that’s a plus and something we can check off of our list.

We also wrote down as much as we could about our lifestyle to give CCPD a good idea of how we hope our dog will fit in. She is going to be the first animal we welcome into our family and we are all incredibly excited. We want her to be a large part of our daily lives and always included. For instance, my husband and I are avid runners, so we would love for her to go on runs with us daily. In addition, taking her on car rides is something we plan to do as well, whether it’s into town or to the beach. During this form I tried my best to explain our idea of the perfect trained protection dog. Everything about this form was wonderfully laid our and allowed for an immense amount of detail, which I thought was great. The last question asked was our ideal time frame for delivery and we answered with one month from now. I hope that we can start this journey and welcome this new addition to our family sooner than later.
